Indian approach towards Afghanistan particularly in the background of purposed withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan is a goal of its classic strategic policy towards Pakistan. It is very important for India that Pakistan does not have a hold in Afghanistan affairs. Historically India has always tried to prevent Pakistan from gaining any domination in Afghanistan. India would like to minimize Pakistani contribution in the Afghan political affairs and to ensure that an orthodox rule of the Taliban does not emerge again. Pakistan conversely has viewed Afghanistan as a counter balance to Indian dominance in South Asia. Islamabad views friendly relationship between India and Afghanistan as disadvantageous to its national security interests as the two states border the two sides of Pakistan. Pakistan feels encircled by India on both sides of its borders. A friendly political affiliation with Kabul is viewed by Pakistan as vital to avoid a strategic position of being caught between a dominant rival India in the east and Afghanistan who declares the Pashtun subjected areas as a part of its country in the west. This fear of strategic encirclement by the India created a security dilemma for the Pakistan.
