[First Edition] The Tomb of Tutankhamen - Howard Carter (E.P. Dutton, 1972) Illustrated Archaeology Classic Howard Carter [Used - Near fine]
Carter, Howard. The Tomb of Tutankhamen. New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1972. Hardcover in pictorial dust jacket. Octavo (9.5 × 7 in.). 238 pp. With 17 color plates and 65 monochrome illustrations by Harry Burton; printed in Great Britain by Acorn Typesetting & Litho Services Ltd., Feltham, Middlesex. First Dutton printing of the revised 1972 edition (original text copyright ©1954 by Phyllis J. Walker). This edition reproduces the complete narrative of Howard Carter's historic 1922-1932 excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun, condensed from his three-volume original. The text vividly recounts the search, discovery, and systematic cataloguing of the burial treasures, enriched with Burton's archaeological photographs and a new suite of full-color plates. Includes two scholarly appendices including Douglas Derry's report on the royal mummy and P.E. Newberry's on the floral wreaths. Condition: Near Fine in Near Fine unclipped dust jacket. Clean, bright boards and contents; pages crisp and free of foxing. All monochrome and color plates exceptionally sharp and luminous. Jacket retains deep black tone with only minute rubbing at edges and a trace of handling wear, one of the best-preserved examples of this edition. A neatly penned 1973 Latin presentation inscription ('Ad Christopher Helm Thomas Ziebarth. Joe McPherson') appears on the front free endpaper, else unmarked. Translates to "To Christopher Helm Thomas Ziebarth from his sponsor, teacher, and friend, Joe McPherson." A superbly preserved copy of the definitive modern edition of Carter's firsthand account of the world's most famous archaeological discovery. Howard Carter (1874-1939) was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist renowned for discovering the intact tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in 1922. Trained as an archaeological draftsman, Carter's meticulous excavation and cataloguing techniques set new professional standards. Working under the patronage of Lord Carnarvon, he uncovered the extraordinary treasures of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and forever changed the study of the ancient world. His multivolume The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1923-1933) remains a landmark of archaeological literature, combining scholarly precision with an explorer's sense of wonder.
