[First Edition] Mechanical Drawing High Schools French Svensen 1919 McGraw Hill VG French, Thomas E.; Svensen, Carl L. [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
French, Thomas E.; Svensen, Carl L. Mechanical Drawing for High Schools: A Text with Problem Layouts. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., 1919. First Edition, Tenth Impression (March 1924). Hardcover. A foundational early 20th-century instructional text in mechanical drafting, designed for high school and technical education. The work presents a systematic introduction to drawing techniques, including orthographic projection, isometric drawing, dimensioning, lettering, and blueprinting. Richly illustrated throughout with diagrams, problem layouts, and technical figures, it reflects the standardization of engineering education in the United States during the post-World War I period. This copy is from the first edition, tenth impression (March 1924), as stated on the title and copyright pages, with a full printing sequence listed through the tenth printing. Published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. (New York; London) and printed by The Maple Press Company, York, PA, the volume notes a total issue of 73,000 copies - evidence of its widespread classroom adoption and continued demand in technical curricula. Condition: Very Good. Original brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. Binding is firm, square, and solid. Boards show moderate rubbing and scattered surface wear, with light edge and corner wear. The spine remains legible with mild wear at the ends. Interior pages are bright, clean, and largely unmarked, with only occasional light foxing. A neat ink ownership inscription appears on the front blank. Two pieces of vintage graph/notation paper are laid in, showing light wear but remaining a desirable and relevant addition. Thomas E. French (1871-1944) was a prominent engineering educator and textbook author associated with The Ohio State University, where he helped shape modern mechanical drawing instruction. Along with Carl L. Svensen, he contributed significantly to the standardization of drafting education in American schools, producing texts that were widely adopted in both secondary and technical institutions.
