This set is signed by President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in the final volume, The First Ladies, above the foreword by Mrs. Carter.

First edition. Very near fine in near fine dust jacket with a couple of short creased tears and small nicks. The jacket art by well-regarded artist W.T. Benda. Novel of the first year of WWI written from an American perspective by an Englishman with homes in both Massachusetts and Western Canada. Inscribed by the author: "To My Co-Writer Nov. 9. 1918 From his grateful Father. W.J.D." William James Dawson was an English clergyman, the author of a couple of dozen successful novels, as well as the father of best-selling author Coningsby Dawson, who was wounded while serving in the Canadian Army in WWI, and had returned to his families home in 1917 and 1918. W.J. and Coningsby Dawson co-edited two anthologies together, and we think Coningsby is the most likely recipient of the book. However it is at least worth noting that the word "his" in the inscription is a bit blotted and could possibly spell "her". We were unable to reach a firm conclusion, even under several levels of magnification. W.J. Dawson had at least one daughter, Muriel Dawson, who also edited her brother Coningsby's letters, so could be an alternative candidate to be the recipient. In any event a nice association copy of this World War One novel.
